Quiet Agony

QUIET AGONY

by Lynn Mari

Look into my eyes!
Can you see the presence that scared my face,
my smile replaced?
Oh ya, it's me in Quiet Agony.

Across the room it fills the air,
it's also present on the chairs,
in the halls, the school yards and the malls,
it walks and talks, it's everywhere
that child, the one you often see, is living Quiet Agony.

In many homes and churches too,
in parks and workplaces, staring back at you,
Along the roadside, on the train
and all those things we can't explain,
you see that's Quiet Agony.

The children who cannot concentrate at school
because they are forced to choose between a meal -
a pair of shoes and a walk to school,
The drop-outs on the corner,
those depicted as fools,
they are Quiet Agony.

All those who cannot sleep at nights
life's a struggle, a constant fight,
they see the pain their parents feel
yet Mom convinces them "it's alright."
She lives a lie, teaches a lie,
as the tears so often fill her eyes.
She soothes her baby as she succumbs to Quiet Agony.

No love, no care, no more hold me, I'll take you there.
"It's you for you and me for me," the Politicians's policy.
The thousands that are homeless, the thousand unemployed,
the hungry and the lonely who do not have a voice.
The cry of the young, the pain of the aged,
the sorrow of the parents, the mother's heart ache,
the suffering of babies who do not have a choice.
Let's not forget the hopeless still wanting to be free.
Oh yes my friends we've all experienced Quiet Agony.

There's rent to be paid, no food for days, Lord is there no better way.
Others make the assumption, I'm uneducated or lazy.
They don't know me, I work real hard, So stand corrected.
Can't you see we are all Quiet Agony,
Yes, you and me, We are Quiet Agony.
