The gun violence through out the City of Toronto has been quite a concern this past summer. With the drive by shooting of the 4 year old boy on Driftwood Ave. the Jane Finch Community has again been in the news.
It is unfortunate though that when events like this take place, it results in a negative perception of the community as a whole. As a Community Minister my experience of the people in this community has been quite different. It has been my experience that they are wonderful people with a caring spirit, a deep sense of community and a willingness to share what little they have. Sure there may be some problems in the community but in many cases these problems are related to larger issues such as poverty, isolation and alienation.
The Community Ministry in conjunction with various different networks and in partnership with community residents have and continue to make a difference in the in the Jane Finch community. The Community Ministry is a ministry of presence, walking in solidarity with the culturally diverse, low income community of Jane and Finch. The ministry seeks ways to address the problems but in ways that that honour the strengths, assets and riches of the community.
